Materials #03: Choosing a UV Silicone Adhesive that Meets UL94 V-0
OVERVIEW OF THE UL94 V-0 FLAME-RETARDANT STANDARD IN THE SEMICONDUCTOR SPACE
In high-density mechatronic and PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) design, mechanically fixing components with narrow-pitch leads (board-to-board connectors, control chips, or large power inductors) is vital for eliminating vibration/shock loads and solder fatigue cracking.
However, when operating at high load power with large accumulated heat, the flammability of polymer compounds (adhesives included) is an ever-present hazard.
For that reason, most high-end board enclosures are required to use silicone adhesives that meet the UL94 V-0 standard.
What exactly does the UL94 V-0 standard require?
According to Underwriters Laboratories (UL):
- UL94 V-0 is the minimum strict vertical-burning rating for plastics and bonding compounds.
- The test specimen must self-extinguish within 10 seconds after the igniting flame is removed.
- Total afterflame time for 5 specimens must not exceed 50 seconds.
- No dripping of burning particles that would ignite the surgical cotton placed underneath.
1. Analyzing the Technical Specifications & the UV–Moisture Combination
On the production line, we prioritize silicone adhesives with a Dual-Cure (UV + Moisture) mechanism:
- Stage 1: Primary UV curing (UV-Curing)
- As soon as an ultraviolet beam is applied (short wavelengths of 365 nm or 405 nm), the silicone cures instantly in just 3–5 seconds at the areas exposed to direct light.
- This lets the board be temporarily fixed in place immediately so it can move on to the next stages, optimizing the takt time of the automated assembly line.
- Stage 2: Secondary moisture curing (Moisture-Curing)
- In shadowed areas (under uneven component bodies, in the gaps between narrow leads), the UV beam cannot reach (the shadow zone).
- A moisture-driven cure mechanism takes over the natural polymerization, letting the adhesive reach extremely strong, load-bearing adhesion over the following 24–72 hours.
The critical mechanical properties to verify:

2. Application Guide for Positioning Narrow-Pitch Components
A lead pitch of 0.5 mm or smaller is a huge challenge for dispensing adhesive for mechanical fixing. If the operator's technique or the positioning robot drifts out of alignment, the silicone will cause a short circuit or contaminate the contact connector.
A 4-step procedure to the 5S standard of a Kyoto field:
- Step 1: Pre-cleaning the contact surface
Apply 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) solvent to wipe away plating solder residue and anti-oxidation oil, ensuring the contact surface is absolutely dry to boost adhesion.
- Step 2: Micro-dispensing the adhesive
Use an ultra-fine needle nozzle (30G–32G) combined with a high-frequency pulsed pneumatic pressure controller to precisely dispense a single, ultra-thin drop of adhesive onto the rear of the component, at least 1.0 mm away from the pitch lead edge.
- Step 3: Rapid UV cure (UV Irradiation)
Apply a high-intensity UV LED lamp at 1000–1500 mW/cm² for about 5 seconds to rapidly cure and lock the position.
- Step 4: Natural shadow-zone maturation (Moisture Cure maturation)
Store in a transit area with controlled humidity and temperature at 40–60% RH in a dry, well-ventilated fixture zone for 24 hours.
3. Vital Precautions When Working with UV Silicone
- Controlling resistance drop (Corrosion Prevention): Absolutely do not use acetic-acid condensation silicone (which gives off a sour vinegar smell as it cures), because that acid will corrode and sever the ultra-fine buried copper wiring on the PCBA. You must choose a Neutral (alkoxy) adhesive system.
- Eye protection from ultraviolet light: Technicians must be equipped with certified UV-protection orange safety glasses to fully protect the retina while the priming UV lamp operates continuously.
- Strict shelf-life enforcement: Because the adhesive is dual-cured by air moisture, once the seal is removed the adhesive syringe should be used up within 48–72 hours, or stored in a cold nitrogen-dry cabinet with a sealed tip to prevent the adhesive from setting hard at the nozzle tip.
