Utility requirement & machine capability calculator
The tool converts every load to kVA through its power factor, applies the demand factors you enter and returns the incomer current; converts each cylinder's air use to free air and adds leak and margin allowances; and divides the effective run time by the tact to give the output.
How to use
- Enter the calculation conditions
Enter the dimensions, loads, speeds or operating conditions requested by the form.
- Run the calculation
The tool applies the formulas shown on this page to the entered values.
- Review the result
Review the resulting specification and checks, then verify them against the cited source, current standard and real operating conditions before use.
Core formula
S = P / cosφ; I₃ₚ = S / (√3·U); Q = ΣA·s·(P+0.1013)/0.1013·n; d = √(4·Q_act/(π·v)); N = t_run/tact·yield
Example using default values
0.4 kW, cosφ 0.85 → 0.47 kVA; Ø32 rod12 stroke100 @0.5 MPa → 1.71 NL/cycle; 22.950 s ÷ 4,54 s × 99% → 5.003 pcs/shift
Source: Boyle's law and the continuity equation (air consumption and pipe sizing, atmosphere ~0.1013 MPa); SMC compressed-air pipe velocity practice (~15 m/s main, ~20 m/s branch); diversity-factor concept per IEC 60364. Demand factors and availability are user inputs, not standard values.
Frequently asked questions
What demand factor should I use?
The tool imposes none, because the figure depends on your machine: a servo that runs a few seconds per cycle is nothing like a fan that runs continuously. Take it from the timing chart — the share of the cycle that actuator is genuinely loaded — then add margin.
Why is air consumption expressed as free air (ANR)?
Because compressors and flow meters are rated in air volume at atmospheric conditions. The volume inside the cylinder at working pressure must be multiplied by (P + 0.1013) / 0.1013 before it can be compared with a compressor rating.
Does this replace the panel designer's electrical calculation?
No. It only gives the total power and current so the customer knows what supply to run. Cable sizing, protective devices, inrush current, voltage drop along the run and protection coordination must be calculated separately to the standard in force.
